A potted history of the world.

Nicely observed, and a hoot to boot.

So what are you up to Die Antwoord?

So I presumed these guys where producing some top notch tongue in cheek intertainment but it appears there may be more to it than that.

Having posted their Zef Side clip last week – thanks again crackunit – I thought that would be it. One hit of specialness. However, it seems there is much more going on here than that. Life lounge have just posted Zef Side and the another piece of pure gold, Enter The Ninja (Official) along with this.

“So apparently these guys are kind of serious about their music and that these clips are just some promo and are a bit of a piss take? . Apparently their live shows are making it big in some parts of Europe. All I know is I want to see more….

Thanks Nate and Bosco @ the serps

Yin to the Yang! “

I had to know more. Having had a little snoop around, here is their ‘Next Level Website’. I’m still no wiser as to what is going on, is it just some very special viral, are they serious musicians AND excellent marketeers?

Who knows. Whatever is going on they have totally nailed it. If they are as they seem, a South African group with talent, imagination and some of the sharpest wit around then what a breath of fresh air. I’m not sure any agency could have created this, it’s just too good. The photography, copy, production, attitude, beats … all glorious.

Thank you.

Oh so special.

You Taking the Hip Hop or what?

Check out the production, acting, writting …

Just lovely.

Massive Attack. Massive Talent. Massive foresight.

The impending launch of Massive Attacks latest album (8th Feb) hsa seen the release of a number of specially commissioned short films.

Just beautiful and wickedly, fatalistically humorous.

In addition to the fact that they seem to keep producing stunning music they continually push their genre. the way they tour then release an album afterwards, their approach to digital community generation, their ‘on the money’ marketing strategies and now their approach to the music video.

Thank you guys.

Mash-ups are here to stay

The humble mash-up just keeps on going, re-inventing, re-making, re-cycling, re-creating.

Made entirely from clips taken from James Cameron’s Terminator 2.

Generational reinvention

Life on the Rails with Train Hoppers and Vagabonds by Mike Brodie

I look at a lot of photography; fashion, architectural, reportage, conceptual … much of it is moving, powerful, inventive. Mike Brodie though has cracked open a door into another world; he has given me a glimpse of a world I had no idea existed in the way that it does.

mb1

I’ll let Lifelounge fill you in on the details:

Mike Brodie (aka the Polaroid Kid) is a self trained photographer who in 2003 left home at the age of 18 to travel across America via the railway network that divides the land. He spent the next 3 years documenting his travels and the fellow train hoppers he encountered on the way. His images reflect an intriguing world and mostly hidden traveling culture of people experiencing absolute freedom of life without ties (and showers).

I strongly recommend that you go and check out the images on lifelounge - here. Brodie is clearly a talented photographer with a natural eye but it is his subjects that captivate me.

His work opens that door onto a tribe of delicate young people defiantly living apart. I’m not going to romanticise these guys – I’m sure there are some horrific tales to be heard – but their creativity, individuality and style is startling.

Another reminder of the role of personal style or fashion as a means to establishing a sense of identity and difference.

Augmented reality – augmented.

Augmented reality has been hanging around for a while now and it’s probably fair to say that it has been exciting, impressing and then quickly boring many of us.

As with many new technological applications people figured out the tech before there were any valuable uses for it. There has been loads reasonable stabs at using this new sci-fi wonder feature but basically we’ve all done a lot of printing out of triangles, fiddling with webcams and ultimately, suffered minor disappointment. However, as with many technologies it didn’t take long for that amazing human grey matter to start figuring out some awesome applications.

And that’s exactly what some wonderful people have been doing – augmenting augmented reality.

Poke came along and gave us Duckzilla – not exactly a great life enhancing tool but maybe the best advertising use to date – , AKQA gave us the US Postal Service’s Priority Mail Virtual Box and then Layar, the world’s first augmented reality browser.

- thanks Mike Arrauz and Michael Lebowitz

Then we got the iPhone tube (or toob) AR app.

- thanks rubbishcorp

Now there’s AR twitter apps

- thanks rubbishcorp

And this. AR tweets, messages, sites and 3D models in a ‘real’ space for others to pick up and view when there are in the vicinity.

- thanks rubbishcorp

And everything about it makes me really rather happy. I love the growth of AR, the speed and creativity of the innovations and the excitement at what awesomness is surely yet to come.

Invention is driven by many motivators, the most famous being war. Most invention is ultimately driven by capitalism and the desire for money but within these frameworks the true food of much invention is passion. Imagine the excitement of the geeks working on these AR projects as tech that they saw in Star Wars as kids comes to life through their hands. Man they must wear nappies in those labs.

What wonderful and amazingly inventive creatures we are.
